10 Essential Tips for Doing Pilates with Arthritis

If you have arthritis, you may be worried that Pilates could aggravate your symptoms.
While it's a good idea to approach it carefully, by knowing your own body and taking some precautions, Pilates can actually help alleviate them! Here are my top tips on how to approach starting a Pilates practice (or any other workout regimen).

Start with gentle exercises and increase the intensity very gradually.
Do your research. Look at websites and reviews, and ask around to find a well-qualified, certified instructor at a renowned studio with deep experience working with clients who have arthritis.
Let your teacher know that you have arthritis and tell them about any pain you might be having.
Correct alignment is the key to protecting your joints.
Avoid pushing through pain and omit exercises or ask your instructor for modifications as needed.
Your arthritis is unique to you and may feel different every day. Observe your body without judging and make any necessary adjustments. Find out how much you can do without causing a flare if you have an inflammatory form of arthritis.
A good teacher is important, but we only see the outside of your body – we need your feedback to make any adjustments you may need.
While group classes are more economical, private sessions with a certified Pilates instructor will help you learn good form and work out what works for you.
Pilates is great, and staying active in other ways has additional benefits. Find a low-impact way of moving your body like walking, water aerobics or cycling that keeps you moving.
The single most important thing is staying in motion – keep up your practice and enjoy how good your body feels!
